Position: Gallery Director
Reports to: Board of Trustees
ROY G BIV Gallery is animated by its mission to serve, support, and nurture emerging artists within and outside its gallery walls. ROY seeks a Gallery Director that shares this passion. The successful candidate will lead the gallery in exhibiting innovative contemporary art from emerging artists, finding new avenues of funding, managing volunteers, representing ROY in the community, and supporting the Board of Trustees for the strategic planning of the organization.
Organization Background
ROY G BIV Gallery is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization located in Columbus, Ohio. After 30 years in the Short North Arts District, ROY moved to its new home in Franklinton in 2019. The gallery supports artists in the beginning stages of their careers by providing exhibition opportunities, promotion, educational workshops, and professional criticism. ROY gives these artists a platform to express themselves freely, beyond commercial boundaries. ROY connects them with mentorship and education, which allow them to thrive. The gallery works to increase art awareness and appreciation in the public through partnerships and monthly artist’s programming. ROY plays a key role in Central Ohio today by introducing the public to up-and-coming and experimental artists.
General Duties
The Gallery Director manages the gallery’s operations, including organizing solo, group, and special exhibitions, education and public programming (opening receptions, artists’ talks, and other events), development and finance, and external communications. She/he/they manages, secures and maintains the property and facilities of the gallery, manages the promotion of gallery exhibitions and events, arranges the installation of exhibitions, and handles art sales. Other responsibilities include recruiting and training volunteers and interns.
The Director works closely with the Board of Trustees to create and implement programming, plan future exhibition seasons and calls for entries, build relationships in the community with local artists and establish partnerships with other organizations. Duties include fundraising and development activities, managing grants and developing relationships with foundations, corporations, members, and individual donors.
The Director works in conjunction with the Board to develop strategic direction and establish initiatives to fulfill the mission of ROY G BIV.
Detailed Duties
Gallery Management and Operations
Manages gallery during business hours, opening receptions and other events
Maintains the gallery space and supervises the security of artwork
Answers email and phone inquiries about exhibition opportunities, space rentals and upcoming events. Manages the space rental process (contract, etc.)
Recruits and manages interns and volunteers
Handles art sales, call for entry fees, membership fees, donations and grant payments
Works with Board Treasurer to organize monthly financial records
Regularly communicates with the Board of Trustees and attends bimonthly Board meetings and Committee meetings
Exhibitions and Programs
Directs installation and de-installation of monthly and special exhibitions
Collaborates with artists to develop exhibition layout and coordinate drop-off and pick-up
Oversees call for entries process including recruitment of jurors
Establishes strong partnerships in the community and expands interest and support for the gallery
Works with the Marketing Committee to maintain ROY’s brand standards
Manages exhibition promotional materials, website, social media and press releases
Plans artists’ and public programs, including critiques and artist’s talks, with the ROY Programming Committee
Regularly communicates with ROY supporters on gallery exhibitions and events
Development
Manages grant applications, reporting, and tracking
Manages the membership program, including renewal notices
Work with the Development Committee to establish relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors
Tracks donations (cash and in-kind), sends donation acknowledgement letters, and maintains member database
Develops new programs, events, and strategies to increase revenue and support the mission of ROY G BIV
Qualifications
The ideal candidate has experience working as an arts administrator and/or experience with an arts organization. They will have excellent communication skills and can work with all types of personalities, as this position requires coordinating events between multiple people and businesses. They will also demonstrate the following competencies and attributes:

Excellent writing skills — grant-writing experience is preferred but not required
Able to prioritize multiple items simultaneously and delegate appropriately
History of working effectively with all people irrespective of their history, economic status, challenges, race, gender, educational level, or sexual orientation
Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, social media, website content management systems and donor management software
Bachelor’s degree required
Previous fundraising experience preferred
Compensation
$38,000 annually. The position is part-time with flexible hours and includes a 2 week vacation plan.
