ROY Alum: 1989

I have an incredibly close relationship with ROY G BIV Gallery. I was there from the beginning, assisting founding Art Director John D. Chamberlain, and later stepped into his role as ROY’s director and curator for the first 10 years after his untimely death in December. I cherish those early years—the remarkable exhibitions we presented, the artists I worked with, and the lasting impact the Gallery had, and continues to have, on the Columbus community. ROY G BIV Gallery is an outstanding example of determination, integrity, and commitment to showcasing artistic talent in Ohio and beyond. I am proud of what we accomplished there, and proud that, 37 years later, the Gallery continues to support hundreds of artists. The experience gave me knowledge, integrity, and deep joy, and it still brings me happiness to know that the Gallery remains an accessible space where artists can begin or continue their creative lives.

BIO: Daniel Work served as the Gallery’s first director from 1990 through 2000. Daniel personified ROY in its early years and set the stage for the Gallery’s continuing success. Daniel Work is now a Portland, Oregon-based artist and painter known as the "Painter for the People," who was named an official artist for The People's Artist 2026 project founded by Johnny Depp. He has dedicated decades to his art practice, noting in 2026 that he decided to become an artist at age 6 and has spent a lifetime creating. Daniel returns to central Ohio often and can always be found in June at the ComFest in Goodale Park.
